“Merrily, merrily eatin’ off these streams…” -Jay-Z (Shawn Carter)
With the skyrocketing popularity of FENTY BEAUTY, there has been this resurgence of Black-owned brands. In a previous life, I wanted to be a makeup artist (MUA). I mean, I was wearing lashes just because it was Wednesday! It was the creativity for me.
I also remember the shade ranges, and how you had to mix 2 (or more) get anything to match. And that wasn’t that long ago! Remember, I am only 40–I’ve been wearing makeup since I was 15. I remember Black Opal and Fashion Fair–I mean, I still remember my shades!
What I love seeing now is when I go into Sephora, Ulta and Target to see women that look like me seeing more variety for women that look like me! Black women are the most creative women ever! I will be taking no questions on that! None!
From The Lip Bar and how Sis took rejection and made an empire; Pat MacGrath whose lipsticks at staples in my bag (her highlight is–OOH!); Beauty Bakerie with her setting powder that makes me feel like all things are possible;
Fenty Beauty STAY on our necks about everything! EVERYTHING!
Girl! I mean, there is a pride that I have when I open my makeup bag and I can identify Black owned makeup products, making my go-to brands BLACK OWNED! And the fact my sisters on social media are creating their own brands?! One you need to watch for is Makeup by Tammi!
From the MUA’s whobeat faces in bathrooms before nights out, making glosses in their kitchens, filling orders on lunch breaks, and reviewing on YouTube–I see you. I am proud of you, and the world needs your product too! Rihanna can’t make all the money…
