In Shakespearean plays, there is always the role of what is known in literature as ‘The Fool’. Don’t be deceived though. The Fool is never that. In history, we know these characters had the unique privilege of amusing the upper class–especially the monarchy. They can, could, did say things that no one else could. They got away with things no one else could dream of–and often didn’t! It is always with the vehicle of humor that true gets said to power.
David Khari Webber Chappelle is not a fool. Never has he been one. With him making the announcement that he is going back to NETFLIX? This is just the icing on the cake, Torches! The world needs truth said to it, and who else is fitted to say it other than the man who walked away from Comedy Central with his integrity in tact? I’ll wait.
One of the reasons why I love literature is for the power of this character–this unassuming person with the power to crumple a King or Queen with a word or phrase. In being old enough to remember Dave Chappelle being in token roles on network television (Google the show ‘Buddies’), a role on Home Improvement, and him being on Def Comedy Jam–this is only a natural progression!
The world needs Dave Chapelle!
The world needs Dave Chapelle because truth needs to be said in every avenue, in every format, by someone bold enough to not care who frowns up or walks out when it is said! From his speaking about police violence, terrorism, racism, history, family and whatever else steamrolls through the humor factory that is his imagination–the world still needs Dave Chapelle! For whatever reason, people are more able to handle truth when you make them laugh first. That way when they say they laughed so hard they couldn’t breathe, they remember what it’s like to choke. Humor is the spoonful of sugar that you taste before the bittersweet of truth. The fact that Dave Chapelle is still out her speaking truth to power, make me smile. Especially when he says things like this (as it relates to the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021):
“Watch the tapes. Watch that crowd that told Colin Kaepernick he can’t kneel during a football game, try to beat a police officer to death with an American flag. Look at that shit. What was Edward Snowden talking about; who is the terrorist now that they’re looking for? It’s you, not me. Not my Black, Muslim ass. It’s YOU. Who are they militarizing the police for? They didn’t call the National Guard on my Black ass! It’s you. That’s what White people did. They felt what Black people been feelin’ for 400 years–for thirty minutes!– stormed the Capitol and rubbed their shit on the walls! They carried a fuckin’ Confederate flag through the Rotunda. The Confederate Army didn’t even do that! Motherfuckers, you went very, very far. It was a simple question, do you have a country or not, and you said, “No.” My God, we’re in quite the pickle, aren’t we?”Dave Chappelle, REDEMPTION SONG (YT Channel: Netflix Is A Joke)
We are Mr. Chappelle, yes we are.
